3. Cable Modem:
An announcement about the upcoming demonstration on April 12th was
made.

Mr. Smith from the Residence Life office gave a history of the whole
issue and told us where it stands as of now. From February all apartments
should be setup for cable modem service. It is the responsibility of the
residents to procure the necessary hardware (cable modem, network card).
Mr. Smith said he would actively look into possibility of the UA buying
cable modems in bulk and selling it to residents to avail of possible
educational discounds and bulk rates. For this he felt it would be useful
to know how many residents would be interested in buying cable modems
through the UA offices.

One resident brought up the issue of having a cable outlet only in the
living room and whether the UA would take responsibility for providing
additional outlet(s) in the bedroom. Mr. Smith wanted to explore the
possibility of the UA doing this because of bulk discounts (on cable wire
and connectors) as also for safety issues with having a wire running from
the living room to the bedroom. He also mentioned that the signal strength
might be affected if the wiring from the living room to the bedroom was not
done properly (without kinks at corners, etc.)

4. Bikes:
The flyer with the corrected dates for claiming bikes from maintenance
was given out to all attendees. It was pointed out that many residents
might not be fully aware of maintenace removing unused bikes from the
bike-racks and also the dates before which they have to claim them from
maintenance before they are sent out to surplus. We might have to remind
all residents about this again, maybe through a flyer or in the next
newsletter (since we have enough time before the deadline June 3)

5. Other issues:
. Prakash brought up the issue of naming the monthly meetings to reflect
the fact that it is open to all residents and not just for the UACC
members. He suggested calling it the "University Apartments Community
Residents" meeting instead of UACC Meeting.

. The possibility and advantages of having a maintenance rep at these
meetings was discussed among those present and with Mr. Smith. One resident
had some issues with the maintenance personnel wearing shoes inside the
apartment. Mr. Smith suggested that the maintenance personnel can carry
rolls of paper with them which they can layout on the apartment floor to
avoid soiling the carpets/floors. Everyone agreed that this was a better
alternative to asking the maintenance personnel to remove their shoes
(since it might violate OSHA regulations as they are handling heavy
equipment, working with electricity, etc.) Mr. Smith also suggested the
possibility of scheduling maintenance visits at times convenient for the
residents (especially for those with babies and children).

. Mr. Smith also suggested having feedback forms for residents to use to
report problems and issues they might have. It was felt that this would be
better than waiting for the monthly meetings to air/address residents
grievances.

. The general problem of low attendance at the monthly meetings was
discussed. One issue might be reminding the residents a day or two before
the meeting since many would have forgotten about the meeting after reading
it in the newsletter. Possibility of using email to notify residents of
meetings and events was also discussed but the problem of getting everyone
to sign up for these email lists still exists.

(Vinod: We could create an announcement only list to which every resident
is required to be subscribed and to which only Maria and maybe the
president of the UACC can post messages. This would be a good way of making
announcements. Several offices all over campus are not doing this to ALL
students/staff irrespective of whether they want to receive these emails -
I get emails on all accounts that I have at the university including my lab
account and my neo account and I get emails from the Assoc. of Former
Students, PTTS, Registrar, Student Finance Office, etc. most of which I am
not interested in hearing from and definitely not at two places and twice a
week)
