University Apartments Community Council Meeting Minutes for 9/14/06

 

A presentation was given by Zahira Merchant from Career Services.  She advised of three things students need to get a job which include a resume, interview and networking.  Ms. Merchant also suggested the Career Center maintains a database of companies of potential employers for students and announced Career Services is working with University Apartments Program Staff to offer services at the Community Services Office on Wednesdays from 6-8pm, the date of opening would be announced at a later date.

 

University Police Officer Dee Donovan discussed lighting updates and upcoming safety programs.  She shared a list of all the events and safety programs are listed on the Cops Website.

 

Chareny, Kate Kiernat and Dan Mizer shared an update about the new University Apartment feasibility site report.

 

Dan Mizer advised of new additions which include an Emergency blue light that has been added near the bus stop on Calvin Moore, three way stop signs have been placed at W/X Row and lights have been installed around the Mailbox area across from the community center.  Power for the new light will be added as soon as possible. 

 

Wandalyn Shanklin advised of upcoming programming activities – A Mocktail Party (Alcohol Awareness) is planned for September 21st from 6:30-8pm at the Community Center.  The event will feature a Virtual Bar and Goggles Interactive Activities.  To advertise the event, Resident Advisor, Ian Carroll and RHA leader, Michelle Berry dressed in black with painted white faces and passed out flyers about the event and information about how some TAMU students died as a result of alcohol related accident.

Ms. Shanklin announced a limited amount of tickets are available to Friday 9/15 and Sunday 9/17 Women Soccer Game both at 7pm. 

 

Ramesh Sagili gave an update from Paul Obiazi regarding the Richard Petty Safe Driving Event on campus on Sept. 28th & 29th to educate students on safe driving. The program is a four hours training and consists of an education piece on managing a vehicle on different roadway circumstances. A total of 40-50 students will be needed for each time slot. To participate in the event you need a valid drivers license that would allow you to drive in the U.S. Participating students who successfully completes the program will receive a certificate of recognition at the end of the program. A sign up sheet was passed for resident/students to sign up.

 

Kate Kiernat discussed and passed out handouts about University Apartment work order for the online system.

 

UACC President, Venkat Goruganti gave an update about the Phone Survey advised that the survey to determine whether the land line phones would be removed at University Apartments would not occur due to the fact most UA residents depend on and use the land line phones in their apartments.  Dan Mizer advised a large majority of undergraduate students in the resident halls use cell phones and the land line phones were frequently used in the resident halls unlike those in the apartments.  Venkat also gave an update on the Shuttle Bus run and the International Football Symposium will be held on October 9th and 14th.

 

Resident Advisor Ian Carroll announced the upcoming Barbecue Cookout for Avenue A and College View Residents will be held Friday September 22 from 5-7pm at the vacant field between Community Center and College View Apartments. Volleyball will be played at the event.

 

Three residents were elected to the University Apartments Community Council Board for VP of Information Technology Raghavendra, VP of Programs Soumyalatha Jamadarkhana and VP of Publicity, Lakhsmi Kakani.  There are still openings for Area Representatives for all apartment units.
